Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction Quarterly Report to the United States Congress

Abstract

Th is quarter marked the first time in more than nine years that the United States had no operational military presence in Iraq. Working chiefly out of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and consulates in Erbil, Basrah, and Kirkuk, the Department of State (DoS) now oversees the remaining and still rather significant U.S.-funded relief and reconstruction efforts. As of April 3, 2012, DoS reported that 12,755 personnel supported the U.S. Mission in Iraq, down about 8% from the previous quarter. Current staffing comprises 1,369 civilian government employees and 11,386 contractors. In February, Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Nides said that DoS will continue to reduce the number of contractors over the coming months in an attempt to right size Embassy operations.1
