Modelling Non-Combatants in Research Wargaming The Way Ahead

Abstract

Research wargaming (RW) within DRDC CORA does not currently include Non-Combatants (NC) as participants in any realistic way. It has been suggested that the absence of NC in some wargames, especially those involving combat in urban zones, may create artificial results and may lead to different conclusions than might otherwise have been obtained. The aim of this note is to highlight several pressing research areas to be examined before including NC in RW. This note is intended to serve as a launch pad for further research. It does not attempt to provide answers to the problem of modelling NC within RW. The note identifies four topic areas for further research with specific questions for each one. The four are: RED Behaviours in the Presence of Non-Combatants; Non-Combatant Behaviours Technical Aspects of Modelling Non-Combatants.; and Usage of Modelling Non-Combatants in Research Wargames
