An Analysis of Military and Commercial Microelectronics: Has DoD's R&D Funding Had the Desired Effect?
Abstract
This research is an analysis of the military research and development (R&D) investment strategy in microelectronics. The period examined is the decade of the 1980s, a time when the military tried to remedy a perceived gap between the state of the art in commercial and military microelectronics through a massive infusion of semiconductor R&D funds. The research looked at integrated circuits available for commercial and military applications, and used the comparison to evaluate the R&D investment strategy that led to the outcomes. The judgement about the past was used as a way of assessing the present and future R&D investment strategies. The research was supported by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force as part of their concept formulation efforts.
