APL-UW Deep Water Propagation: Philippine Sea Signal Physics and North Pacific Ambient Noise
Abstract
The long-term goal is tho understand how the fundamental statistics of broadband low-frequency acoustical signals evolve during propagation through a dynamically-varying deep ocean, and how the oceanic ambient noise field varies throughout deep ocean battlespaces. Current models of signal randomization over long ranges in the deep ocean were developed for and tested in the North Pacific Ocean gyre. The first objective of this research is to determine the validity of these models in a region with different oceanographic features, specifically the Philippine Sea. The second objective is to continue an 18-year long experiment utilizing the North Pacific Ambient Noise Laboratory to determine whether models of oceanic ambient noise capture the spatial and temporal trends observed across the basin.
