Air Force Aerospace Medicine Enterprise Ambulatory Medical Care Survey

Abstract

This report describes the patient population and the broad range of health care services delivered in the permanent, continuously operating US Air Force Flight and Operational Medicine Clinics (FOMC). This report includes information regarding patient characteristics, services provided, clinic utilization, and trend estimates. Methods? A cross sectional analysis was performed on the retrospective cohort of patients who received care at a FOMC during the period 2003-2012. Patient demographic and healthcare data were obtained from the Military Health System (MHS) data Mart (M2). Results? A total of 714,157 patients, comprising 4,829,626 encounters were included in the cohort. Combined, the 77 FOMCs included served an average of 180,996 patients annually across 11 major commands. Overall these patients were majority male (71.0%), and USAF service members or their dependents (80.6%). The largest age categories were 18- to 25-year-olds (45.0%), followed by 31- to 40-year-olds (20.7%). Acute visits were the most common type of health encounter, accounting for 33.6% of all encounters across the study period. The two most common primary diagnoses over the study period were Administrative/social admissions (489,182), followed by ICD-9 V70.5 Aviation Exams (486,341). The most common procedure was for ophthalmologic and otologic treatment, accounting for 65.8% of all procedures across the study period. The number of annual health encounters declined noticeably among USAF dependents and retirees over the course of the study period. Trend analysis revealed nine subpopulations that exhibited an increase or decrease in visits per year of at least 25% from 2003 to 2012.
