Check Six: Take a Look Back (Again) to Ensure Future Fighter Success

Abstract

This thesis reflects on the historical origins of the dissimilar air-to-air adversary conceptand makes comparisons to today's U.S. Navy and Marine Corps adversary forces. This investigation focuses on the cost effectiveness of dedicated adversary aircrews and platforms in providing air combat maneuvering training in comparison to utilizing front-line fleet airframes and aviators for this mission. The examination also considers the current adversary capability within the Department of the Navy (DON), discusses possible solutions to overcome the DON "Red Air'' deficiency, and makes recommendations for material upgrades to improve the DON adversary capability writ large.
