Medical Diplomacy: A Tool for Enabling National Security Strategy Objectives

Abstract

Medical diplomacy can offer 'Smart Defense' alternatives where conventional forces and approaches cannot. The opportunity to conduct military to military engagements, coordinate with local communities and work with the private sector (lGOs, NGOs, PPOs, etc.) organizations to provide uninhibited access can enable the goals set forth in the National Security Strategy (NSS) and by senior USG officials. Viewing linkages between global health and national security in terms of "opportunities" rather than threats enables the USG to improve coordination with international partners and other stakeholders, balancing security and medical diplomacy.
