China and The United States: Time for Change

Abstract

The growth of the Chinese military, along with the economic power that China has amassed in the last 20 years instills fear in the Asia Pacific and throughout the world. This threat perception is mainly due to the lack of knowledge over China's expanding military, as well as the reason it seeks to project power beyond its shores. This essay draws on many sources to show the capabilities in force projection that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) currently has, and the economic, diplomatic, and informational impact that the People's Republic of China (PRC) has had on the US and its Asia Pacific neighbors. The US must foster a relationship with China that is characterized by positive diplomacy and military cooperation. Diplomacy and cooperation must include strategic trust, maintaining communication despite political disagreements, and focusing on commonalities of PRC and US core issues.
