Napoleon's Nightmare: Guerrilla Warfare in Spain (1808-1814) -The French Army's Failed Counterinsurgency Effort

Abstract

The Spanish up rising against Napoleon's invasion of Spain forced Napoleon to deal with a new kind of enemy: the Guerrilla. His troops in Spain had to wage to wars, a conventional one against the Spanish army and the British Expeditionary force; and a uilconventioi1alagainst the people themselves. nonetheless, Napoleoi1 always considered this war as a conventional, and directed his general to the regular am1ies. This misunderstanding of the character and power of the Spanish revolt, and his inability to develop adequate m1conventional tactics to address the guerrilla phenomena, ultimately led to France is defeat in Spain.
