Simplifying Operational Design

Abstract

This paper provides a contextual background for operational design to provide a basic understanding of systems theory. The paper explains operational design's development and evolution, and provides an explanation of the Marine Corps' apprehension towards wholly adopting operational design within its planning process. Many of the adopted operational design models are incredibly difficult to practice and thus inaccessible and too complicated for the majority of military planners. This paper reintroduces John Schmitt's simplified design process and provides a link between the design process and the operational approach as a recommended methodology for the Marine Corps.
