Evolution of the Use of Information within the Operational Art: Impact on Modern US Forces

Abstract

Information consists of three elements when offensively used within warfare -- surprise, psychological manipulation, and deception. The paper addresses the evolution of the use of information in warfare within the context of operational art. The paper traces the initial discussion and implications by the Prussian theorists before World War I, transitions to the discussion by Soviet Operational Art theorist as they discuss how it is involved within in the deep battle and operational shock concepts, and finishes up with the American discussion of operational art with the Airland Battle Concept. The paper concludes with a discussion on how this impacts current American military doctrine and discusses some changes.
