Understanding USSOCOM and US Marine Corps Roles in Crisis Response and Limited Contingency Operations

Abstract

Through Historical Analysis Of The Marine Corps And Us Special Operations Command Roles In Crisis Response And Limited Contingency Operations; The Study Shows That Neither Service Had A Monopoly On Operational Mission Types Or Environments. Instead, Both Services Were Employed Across The Range Of Military Operations And Missions And Are Employed Together Almost Half The Time. The Choice To Employ One Or The Other Or Together Is A Question Of Capacity. The Implications For Future Marine Corps And Ussocom Planners Are Significant Since With Capacity As Their Metric They Can More Accurately Determine What Low Capacity Highly Trained Skills Should Be Maintained In Special Operations Forces And What Higher Capacity Lower Training Skills Should Be Maintained In Marine Forces.
