Smoke Flow Visualisation and Particle Image Velocimetry Measurements over a Generic Submarine Model

Abstract

Experimental testing of a generic submarine model has been conducted in the DSTO low speed wind tunnel. These tests aimed to investigate the off-body flow-field around a generic submarine shape in its bare-hull configuration by performing smoke flow visualisation and gathering quantitative velocity data using particle image velocimtery (PIV). The PIV measurements were compared with computational fluid dynamic (CFD) results and good agreement was obtained. The tests also provided the opportunity to refine the application of the PIV technique in a large-scale wind tunnel facility. These experimental data will complement computational and experimental hydrodynamic analysis of the generic submarine shape.
