Modular Biopower System Providing Combined Heat and Power for DoD Installations

Abstract

Community Power Corporation developed a 100-kW electrical, automated system (BioMax) to gasify biomass into a clean gas for fueling a spark-ignited engine/genset The BioMax was tested at Ft. Carson, CO, meeting or exceeding nearly all of the program goals. Maximum sustainable, net electrical power was 83 kW (goal-75 kW). Maximum sustainable thermal energy output was 180 kW (goal-150 kW). Highest monthly availability was 73%. The BioMax 100 has a relatively high capital cost, making it difficult to compete with grid power in most Dept. of Defense locations. However. operating the BioMax is advantageous when compared to high fuel cost energy generation (e.g. remote locations or TOG operation).
