Operations GUNNERSIDE and GROUSE - Special Operations During World War II Against the German Controlled Heavy Water Plant in Norway

Abstract

Operations Grouse and Gunnerside achieved an outcome of strategic importance when they destroyed the heavy water production at Rjukan in February 1943. The operations were a success due to their execution by Special Operations Forces, which demonstrated that a small, select group of individuals with specialized training and thorough preparation could succeed where a conventional force could not.
