The Market, the Military, and a Dynasty: Insurgency Potential in North Korea

Abstract

North Korea's Kim Chong-il regime continues to be capable of controlling the country's population through its repressive and intrusive internal security forces, despite the empowerment of the country's general population through the growth of the market and erosion of the state's command economy. This population control, and China and South Korea's unwillingness to support regime change, will prevent the North Korean people from conducting a successful insurgency against the regime.
