The Case for Commitment to Haiti

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the reasons the US should commit to a long-term reconstruction effort in Haiti and some possible methods of doing so. The reality is that any investment in Haiti for the short-term must be an enduring investment in Haiti as decades of fleeting solutions by well meaning institutions have resulted in long-term stability problems for Haiti. There are four distinct reasons that the US should commit to Haiti in order to attempt break this cycle: 1) the GOH cannot do it alone; 2) the US has the resources and expertise to contribute to the effort; 3) the extent of the current crisis has provided a unique window of opportunity; and 4) the US, as the predominant power in the region, can ill-afford a failed state in its own back yard.
