SMS Steering Module for Coupling Waves and Currents, 2: M2D and STWAVE

Abstract

This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (ERDC CHETN-IV-60) provides guidance on coupling the two-dimensional (2-D) circulation model M2D with the steady spectral wave model STWAVE through the Surface-Water Modeling System (SMS). Coupling of models is an efficient and accurate means of calculating wave-driven currents, setup and setdown, and wave-current interaction in nearshore regions, including tidal inlets. Procedures and options for coupling M2D and STWAVE within the SMS are described and an example application is provided.
