Spent Acid Recovery using Diffusion Dialysis
Abstract
The Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center (NFESC), working under the direction and support of the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESCTP), has been tasked to demonstrate and validate the technical performance and life cycle costs of a diffusion dialysis (DD) process to remove contaminants from and recycle mineral acid baths used in metal finishing operations. Metal finishing and plating processes are used by the Air Force, Army, and Navy to apply protective coatings to metal parts for corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and magnetic properties. Mineral acids are used to chemically clean or otherwise prepare a base metal for plating or post plating processes. The concentration of metals in the mineral acid baths increases over time and may interfere with the performance of the bath. Eventually, the bath must be discarded. The disposal of the bath contributes significantly to the volume and cost of hazardous waste disposal for the Department of Defense (DoD).
