Hetero-Interfaces for Extreme Electronic Environments
Abstract
Quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (Q-2D-EG) forms at the interface between two perovskite band insulators; LaAlO3 (LAO) and SrTiO3 (STO). Electrical properties of the interface strongly depend on the film thickness. The insulating interface becomes conductive when the film thickness exceeds a critical thickness (3 unit cell for LAO on STO). This conductive interface is two-dimensional in characteristics.
