Historic Landscape Survey, Maxwell AFB, Alabama

Abstract

This document is an inventory and evaluation of the historic landscape features of Maxwell Air Force Base (AFB), Alabama. This document serves to meet the requirements for federal agencies to address their cultural resources, which are defined as any prehistoric or historic district, site, building, structure, or object. This report is especially relevant to Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, which requires federal agencies to inventory and evaluate their cultural resources. Maxwell AFB s historic development has resulted in several landscapes that are unique in their design and implementation. This report outlines the cultural influences that determined the physical layout and construction of Maxwell AFB, and then identifies several historic landscapes within the base. The report concludes with recommendations for the maintenance and preservation of the identified historic landscapes.
