The Effects of Behavioral Changes in Response to Acoustic Disturbance on the Health of the Population of Blainville's Beaked Whales (Mesoplodon densirostris) in the Tongue of the Ocean
Abstract
This project has provided critical information on demography (survival, maturation age, reproductive rates, population age structure and behavior (calf vocal behavior) of Blainville's beaked whales which are being used to inform the Population Consequences of Acoustic Disturbances (PCAD) model for the US Navy's Atlantic Underwater Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC). We report on differences in population age structure at AUTEC, compared to a reference population outside the range. Initial findings of the PCAD Working Group support very low fecundity at AUTEC.
