Old Hickory Lake Appendix M To Park Management Shoreline Management Plan

Abstract

This Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) provides policies and guidelines for the effective long-range management of the shoreline resources of Old Hickory Lake. The Natural Resources Management mission is to manage and conserve those natural resources, consistent with ecosystem management principles, while providing quality public outdoor recreation experiences to serve the needs of present and future generations. Old Hickory Lake is a popular site for a variety of outdoor recreational activities. Recreational demands and developmental pressures increase each year, yet the total amount of public land and water area remains fixed. Sound management is necessary to provide optimum use of finite project resources. The objectives of this plan are to balance the use of public land with the protection and restoration of the natural environmental conditions of Old Hickory Lake. In accordance with our responsibilities under the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969, a primary goal of management of lake resources is to establish, protect, and maintain acceptable fish and wildlife habitat, preserve aesthetic qualities, and promote the safe and healthful use of the lake and surrounding public lands by the general public. This plan addresses vegetation management, construction of shoreline structures, dredging and channel excavation, shoreline stabilization, public involvement and education, and incentives for community partnerships in shoreline management, and restoration and protection of public land. This plan also requires that all approved facility construction activities and plans incorporate best management practices (BMP s), addressing minimization of erosion and sedimentation, spill containment for construction equipment, and proper handling and disposition of solid waste.
