Three-Dimensional Shallow Water Adaptive Hydraulics (ADH-SW3): Turbulence Closure

Abstract

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), has undertaken the development of the multimodule Adaptive Hydraulics (ADH) hydrodynamic, sediment, water quality, and transport numerical code. The Mellor-Yamada level 2.5 and k- turbulence closure models were incorporated into ADH-SW3. This report documents the incorporation of these turbulence closure models into ADH-SW3; it also documents the validation of their incorporation by using them in an application of the ADH-SW3 model code to three flume experiments. These flume tests were designed to ensure that the incorporated turbulence closure models in ADH-SW3 are solving the pertinent equations accurately. A basic description of other turbulence closure options implemented with ADHSW3 is also provided, and a user manual (User Appendix) is included.
