Ballistic Evaluation of 6055 Aluminum

Abstract

The US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) evaluated the ballistic performance of aluminum alloy (AA) 6055-T651 produced by Alcoa as part of a Defense Acquisition Challenge Program. Ballistic evaluation was performed using armor-piercing and fragment-simulating projectiles to determine the V50 ballistic-protection limit (V50) for various thicknesses of material. The V50 was then compared to other ballistic-grade aluminum alloys, namely AA6061 and AA7039. The results of these experiments were used to derive the acceptance tables for AA6055 included in the updated military specification, MIL-DTL-32262A (MR).
