Coast Defense Operations at Ostende and Zeebrugge during the World War
Abstract
The coast defense operations at Ostend and Zeebrugge during the World War extended over practically the entire period of the war. As soon as the Germans occupied the Belgian coast, from the Dutch border to Nieuport, in October 1914 they initiated measures of coast defense which made the entire sector Into one great fortified area. Throughout the war these defenses securely protected the Important harbors and submarine bases of Ostende and Zeebrugge and the right flank of the German Army on the Western front. The operations against them, carried out almost entirely by the British Navy, include in one for or another nearly all types of coastal section. Never seriously threatened, they fell only on the withdrawal of the Germans from Flanders in 1918 because of pressure in other areas.
