Air Force Studies Board
Abstract
During this performance period the NRC completed the following: Under this Board Grant we completed two board meetings held in Washington DC, one in May 2013 and the other in Nov 2013, to collect topics prioritize work plans. Of the studies prioritized by the Board, we completed the Assessment of Directed Energy Research and Development for US Air Force Applications workshop and report, the Assessment to Enhance Air Force and DoD Prototyping for the New Defense Strategy workshop & report, of 3 Defense Against High Speed Weapons workshop meetings until we were put on hold awaiting upgrade from secret to top secret. During this period, the Board Director also provided a new 5-year Board grant follow-on proposal and associated new 5-year Study Support grant task order contract as follow-on to the Block 00 study grant. We restarted the US Air Force Strategic Deterrence for the 21'' Century Security Environment consensus study that was put on hold due to sequestration and the Effective and Efficient US Air Force Development Planning consensus study. During this time, Mr. Michael Turbyfill resigned as Deputy Director, AFSB and Dr. Alan Shaw was hired as his replacement. The follow-on Board, remainder of the Block 00, and new Study Support grants will be used to do the following: Complete the strategic deterrence consensus study and report, the remaining two defense against high speed weapons workshop meetings and report, the flight simulator workshop and report, the development planning consensus study and report, the regainingtech baseline workshop and report, the digital thread workshop and report, the best practices in basic research workshop and two strategic deterrence roundtables.
