Current Trends in Social Media and the Department of Defense's Social Media Policy
Abstract
Social media is dynamic. The only function that remains constant is its ability to connect people to one another. People's desire to communicate and stay connected with others has spawned new social media platforms that allow people to interact when buying groceries, real estate, music, books, etc. However , instead of sitting down at a computer to do this, the advancement of mobile devices and applications allow for these interactions to occur any time and anywhere. The pace at which social media evolves presents a challenge to policy - makers. DoD policy related to social media is sometimes outdated; nonetheless, it plays a critical role of informing the DoD community about safe and appropriate use. However, policy alone is not sufficient to protect DoD and its personnel from malicious actions. Social media guidance and training helps community members understand why the policy was implemented, and increases awareness about social media safety.
