Improved Root Normal Size Distributions for Liquid Atomization
Abstract
This paper identifies two issues with traditional root normal size distributions, of the type used for spray atomization. First, while root normal size distributions are typically expressed in terms of mass mean diameter, they do not actually obtain the correct mass mean diameter. Second, depending on the chosen form, traditional root normal size distributions may exhibit severe non-physical singularities. An alternative root normal size distribution is suggested that avoids these issue. A literature survey finds six possible parameter choices for root normal size distributions. It is found that these parameter choices provide an adequate fit to a wide variety variety of experimental data, except possibly for the largest droplets.
