Human Deception Detection from Whole Body Motion Analysis

Abstract

This research effort (Year 1, 2, and 3) was intended to discover whole-body motion-based deception signature. The year III effort included the collection of data from an additional 30 participants and focused replication analyses of the new samples based on the original findings from Years 1 and 2. This Year 3 final report summarizes the focused replication analyses of the new samples based on the original findings from Year 1. The findings for the temporal/spatial data from year 3 provided some evidence for the replication of the findings from the Year 1 data using a different sample of individuals from different cultural backgrounds collected at a very different geographical site. It is not clear, however, if the lack of clarity in the findings were due to the geographic site, the mixing of different cultures, ethnicities, and genders in the sample, individual differences, or other factors. The findings do provide evidence that a behavioral signature is likely reliable, but larger, more stratified samples with greater quality control over group and individual difference variables may be necessary to tease apart the effects more carefully in the future.
