Strategic Effects of the Conflict with Iraq: South Asia

Abstract

India and Pakistan, the major countries of South Asia, have distanced themselves from the proposed U.S.-led military action in Iraq. Both countries remain concerned that a prolonged war would affect their domestic security situation and their economies adversely. The war will not change either country s long-term relationship with the United States. They see the United States as an important strategic and economic partner. India and Pakistan will continue to provide strong support in the war on terrorism. Increased security cooperation is taking place with India. India, especially, could be a partner in the post-war reconstruction of Iraq s economy, its civil society, and its military.
