Human Computer Interface Design Criteria. Volume 1. User Interface Requirements

Abstract

It is critical to the overall usability of a system that the software provide a user interface with a common/effective appearance and behavior so users can interact effectively with any system built from this software. User interface standardization is particularly important as users are provided the capability to interact with a variety of complex, multi-windowed applications within a single system. The benefits to be gained from standardization are increased user productivity, reduced training requirements, improved system reliability, reduced maintenance costs, and increased efficiency in the development of individual applications as well as entire systems.
