Incorporating a Robot into an Autism Therapy Team

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of pervasive developmental disorders that share common deficits in social interaction and communication. Such deficits may be manifested as the inability to use non- verbal behaviors (such as eye contact and to regulate social interactions. Furthermore, about 50 percent of children identified with ASD present with insufficient language for effective communication. Their spoken language might be characterized by repetitive or idiosyncratic speech, and the affective component may be limited.
