Characterization of Surface Discharge Switches and High Performance Applications Characterization

Abstract

Results of experiments which were conducted to characterize the performance of a surface discharge as a high-performance, self-closing isolation switch for high energy applications are described. These experiments, conducted under both DC and pulsed conditions, lead to a model of switch operation which enables the design of such switches for multi-megajoule operation. The paper describes the successful implementation of a surface switch as an operational component in a multimegampere .
