Missile Defense Alarm: The Genesis of Space-Based Infrared Early Warning

Abstract

Written over ten years ago, this history of the Missile Defense Alarm System, or MIDAS as the program was generally known, remained classified and for the most part confined to a file drawer. After a security and policy review, late in 1998 Lt Gen Eugene L. Tattini, Commander of the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center, declassified MIDAS, an action that liberated its history to be shared with a much wider audience.
