A History of the Huntsville Division: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 1977-1981 Update

Abstract

The Huntsville Division was formed on 15 October 1967, with the exclusive task of designing and constructing facilities needed for the deployment of the Army's Sentinel ballistic missile defense system. As a unique organization within the Corps of Engineers the Huntsville Division had no civil works responsibilities, no geographical boundaries, and no subordinate districts. This narrative relates the history of the Huntsville Division for the period 1977 through 1981. It outlines how the Division developed advanced engineering and management capabilities and became a center of expertise for a number of Corps activities. The capabilities developed during this time frame are a tribute to the men and women, past and present, who met these challenges with dedication and perseverance.
