Cross-species Virus-host Protein-Protein Interactions Inhibiting Innate Immunity

Abstract

The single-stranded negative sense RNA (ssRNA(-)) virus families Arenaviridae, Orthomyxoviridae , and Paramyxoviridae include some of the most deadly emerging zoonotic pathogens. These viruses are known to impair antiviral interferon activation responses in humans through virus - host protein-protein interactions (PPis) that disrupt intracellular signaling pathways. However, little is known about the role of homologous PPis in animal (donor) hosts and the extent of adaptation necessary to form similar complexes in new (recipient) hosts. The present work seeks to characterize the importance of PPis in species jumping events.
