MTADS Live Site Demonstration, Pueblo of Laguna, NM
Abstract
During July and August 1998 NRL conducted an MTADS live site demonstration on Bombing Targets N-9 and N-10 on the Pueblo of Laguna in New Mexico. Surface sweeps and clearances were done on a 36 ha. area centered on each bull's eye. The MTADS magnetometer array was used to survey about 61 ha., including the major ordnance concentrations on each target. Two five-acre sites were established on N-10 which were characterized by relatively low ordnance concentrations. During a 40 hour period, traditional "Mag and Flag"crews surveyed and flagged targets on 6.66 acres on these sites. All flagged targets were dug by independent UXO remediation teams. MTADS magnetometer surveys were repeated on the Mag and Flag sites after remediation as a QA/QC evaluation. On target N-10 the remediation crews dug 1,113 targets in the Mag and Flag area and an additional 431 targets were dug on the remainder of the site. All surface material and dug targets (over 40 cubic meters of OE scrap) is consistent with only 100 lb practice ordnance having been dropped on these sites. The MTADS data analysis specified 25,286 buried targets with sizes consistent with M-38s on the two sites. A detailed cost and performance comparison has been developed comparing Mag and Flag and automated towed-array surveys.
