Abstract

Since the Allied invasion of the PHILIPPINES the Japanese have begun Intensive preparations for the defense of their home islands. This has involved the organization of tactical armies to control the islands of HONSHU. SHIKOKU and KYUSHU. Similar preparations had already bean made on HOKKAIDO and in the N area generally, presumably because of the Allied threat to that area from positions In the ALEUTIANS. Active organisation of defenses and the reorganization of forces into operational units had been in progress since early in 1944. Since January 1944 the estimated strength in the HOKKAIDO KURILES KARAFUTO area has Increased from 88,000 to 233,000.
