Allied Forces, Mediterranean Theater, Western Task Force Operation Plan Number 4-44, Volume 1

Abstract

The code name of the Operation is ANVIL. It is the Navy's task in this Operation to ensure the landing and support of an array intended initially for the capture of TOULON and MARSEILLES and, later, for exploitation inland. The fixed defences of the coastline of Southern France are likely to prove formidable. Strong air support will bs available but success will depend in large measure upon the determination and relentlessness with which the attack is delivered, and supported by the Allied Navies. D day and H hour for the Operation will be signalled later. The Naval Commander for this Operation is Vice Admiral H.K. HEWITT, U.S. Navy, the Commander 8th U,S, Fleet. During the period of the Operation he will use the title "Naval Commander Western Task Force" .
