Results of Flight Tests of the Ercoupe Airplane with Auxiliary Jet Propulsion Supplied by Solid Propellant Jet Units

Abstract

From series of conducted on the rocket boosted Ercoupe airplane the following conclusions were drawn: Solid propellant jets delivering approximately 28-lb thrust for 12 sec gave satisfactory performance; thrust was steady; use of twin assemblies caused no difficulties with stability and control; blast from jets had no adverse effect on the airplane structure; theoretical analyses were verifies, and it appears justifiable to carry out flight tests on an airplane having a gross weight of 10,000 lb with an auxiliary jet thrust of 1000 lb supplied by either solid or liquid propellant rockets.
