Flight Investigation of NACA DS Cowlings on the XP-42 Airplane. 1 - High Inlet Velocity Cowling with Propeller Cuffs Tested in High-Speed Level Flight

Abstract

Flight tests were made of maximum speed and cooling characteristics of XP-42 airplane equipped with a special cowling. Cooling-air pressure varied for different points of measurement on the same cylinder. Results of tests indicated maximum speed of 336 mph at 960 hp at 15,000 ft. Cooling-air pressure recovery on front of engine averaged 80% and rear pressure 39% of free steam-impact pressure.
