Charts for Critical Combinations of Longitudinal and Transverse Direct Stress for Flat Rectangular Plates

Abstract

Because of the fact that the skin of an airplane in flight is subjected to combinations of stress, an investigation was made to determine the effect of buckling of plates when more than one stress is present. Charts are presented giving critical combinations of longitudinal and transverse direct stress for isotropic flat rectangular piston with various edge conditions. The charts are based upon energy solutions, the accuracy of which is checked by comparisons with some particular exact results and lower limit solutions.
