Effect of Normal Pressure on Strength of Axially Loaded Sheet-Stringer Panels

Abstract

Tests under combined axial load and normal pressure were made on twenty-nine 24S-T aluminum alloy sheet-stringer panels of various widths, lengths, and thickness. Normal load on the sheet side of the panel was varied from 6 psi vacuum to 16 psi pressure. Formulas are derived for predicting the effect of normal pressure on the strain for buckling of sheet between stringers. Results of tests indicated that critical buckling strain of sheet depends on sheet thickness, lateral pressure, and restraint of sheet at stringer edge.
