Introduction to the Problem of Rocket-Powered Aircraft Performance

Abstract

The problem of determining the fundamental limitations of the performance possibilities of rocket-powered aircraft is presented. Previous material on the subject is given in condensed form along with supplementary analyses. Limiting velocity of rocket-propelled missile, jet efficiency, nozzle characteristics, maximum attainable altitudes, and range are discussed. Formulas are introduced relating performance of rocket-engine powered airplane to basic weight and nozzle dimensional parameters. Use of formulas is illustrated by application to the special case of a nonlifting rocket-propelled missile.
