Control-Motion Studies of the PBM-3 Flying Boat in Abrupt Pull-Ups

Abstract

The control motion of flying boats with cable-type control systems was investigated. Two control-position recorders were used to determine the motion of the control surfaces and of the control mechanisms. The elasticity of the elevator control system was found to limit the obtainable acceleration to about 3 g for center-of-gravity positions in the usual operating range. The maximum measured rates of stick movement in flight were about one-third less than on the ground.
