Multiple Scattering of Waves

Abstract

Governing equations are obtained for the problem of multiple scattering of waves in a homogeneous isotropic medium containing a statistical array of scattering regions. The equations are applicable to soundwaves in solids, liquids and gases, electromagnetic waves, and stationary quantum-mechanical problems. From these equations the macroscopic properties of the "scattering medium" nay be obtained in terms of thescattering properties of a single scatterer. Questions of energy and measurement are discussed, and several examples are considered. An extension of the theory to the elastic problem with mode conversion is included.
