Dredging and Water Quality Problems in the Great Lakes. Volume 10. Appendix K. Considered Alternate Disposal Areas at Buffalo District Harbors
Abstract
The present report presents the results of a study conducted by the Corps of Engineers with cooperation of the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration to evaluate the effects of water quality of current dredging practices including the disposal of dredged material in unconfined open water areas of the Great Lakes, as well as to develop the most practical methods for management of pollution problems that may be identified as resulting from dredging operations on the Lakes. The investigations conducted during the study included construction and operation of diked areas, treatment of the dredged material, modifications to dredge equipment and in dredging operations, functional studies of the effects on lake ecology of open-lake disposal,, surveys of possible alternate disposal areas at 37 Great Lakes harbors and connecting channels, and an economic evaluation of benefits which might accrue from improved Great Lakes water quality.
