The Comparison of Two Theoretical Models with Tests on Filament-Wound Cylinders,

Abstract

The rectangular fiber model of Cutler and the hexagonal arrayed, random sized, cylindrical fiber model of Hashin are compared with test results of cylindrical shells of various dimensions and fiber orientations loaded in tension, compression, and torsion. Hashin's model appears to be slightly superior but the difficulty of determining the exact properties of the resin, particularly its modulus of elasticity, made it difficult to assess the validity of the theoretical model. Until better control and determination of the resin properties are established, more refined theoretical models are not needed.
