Examination of Defective 1-1/4 Inch Disston Face Hardened Plate,

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the cause of failure of a 1-1/4 inch Disston Face Hardened Plate. Contributing causes of failure are: occasional bad laminations in steel base, coarse martensite near junction of case and core, indications of grain boundary carbide in core, considerable decarburization of case, and the use of a steel base with too high carbon content.
